Coffee Anyone?

I didn’t know much about coffee until I toured a coffee plantation in Costa Rica yesterday.

Coffee grows on a plant that resembles a bush or small tree. The berries are about the size of a grape.

Inside each berry will be either one or two coffee beans. The berries that contain one coffee bean is a much better tasting coffee because it has drawn the full flavor from the plant rather than splitting that flavor between two beans.

The berries start out green and will turn red when they are ready to be picked. Workers that pick the berries during the hot summer weather are paid about $2 per basket. Most workers who harvest the berries can pick about 10 to 15 baskets of berries per day, whereas the real experienced workers can harvest about 20 to 25 baskets per day.

As you can see, it is very hard work for a rather small amount of money.
